The Perfect Dog

One of the highly anticipated events during National Dog Show Month in Philadelphia is the theatrical adaptation The Perfect Dog. The family-friendly show is based off of John O’Hurely’s children’s book of the same name. He was inspired to write the book after an interaction with his young son back stage at the National Dog Show, where he was asked, “Who is the best dog?” The short story has become a huge hit for families with young children. Many copies of the book have been donated to the Ronald McDonald House to provide comfort and guidance to sick children.

            John O’Hurley has been one of the faces of the National Dog Show since its debut in 2002. The dogs that he has met and interacted with have had a huge impact on his life. Through this story and theatrical performance, he hopes to spread some of the happiness that dogs have given him to other families. The show is a musical performance comprised of a cast of seven actors and actual dogs. Sam, the main character, searches for a “perfect” dog to place in a local dog show. The show follows Sam’s experience through the competition and his search for the “perfect” dog.

            The Perfect Dog will be shown on Friday, November 11 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, November 12 at 3 p.m. at the Center Theater in Norristown, Pa. Any family looking for something to do over the weekend should definitely check out this adorable, quirky treat of a show. Dog-sitting Adventures

Max plays with his toy, while Maggie gets cozy. Last week, I had the opportunity to dog-sit two Dachshunds, named Maggie and Max. Just from looking at their short legs and long bodies compared to my Australian Shepherds’ long legs and large bodies, I knew that Maggie and Max were going to be very different from Buddy and Magic! Everything from their bedtime routines to their meal times were different from my own furry friends. However, over the course of my stay, I learned that even Dachshunds and Australian Shepherds share some similarities. Maggie curled up on her pillow. Both pairs of dogs have certain things that set them off. Buddy likes to chase deer and play with a tennis ball, while Max prefers to bark at rabbits and play with a squeaky toy he ripped all of the stuffing out of. What Movies Taught Me About Dogs!

                     It isn’t too hard to find a movie about a dog. There is the Beethoven series, 101 Dalmatians, Lassie, and Bolt. If there was a dog in the plot line, chances are that I watched that movie growing up! Three influential fictional dogs in my lifetime were Air Bud, Balto, and Snoopy. AIR BUD:             Who wouldn’t love a pudding-eating, basketball-playing golden retriever? While Air Bud gave me unrealistic expectations about my dogs’ athleticism, it also taught me that dogs are good friends in tough times. I might not be able to play basketball with Buddy or Magic, but I can still play games with them and talk to them.
