FREE PUPPIES



Just kidding. But now I have your attention. I am ecstatic that my first blog post is about two of my biggest passions: dogs and community service.

I’ve lived on the Main Line all my life and I would bet that we have as many dogs per capita as any big-city suburban area in America.

But, we also have our own dog walk. Calling All Dogs is a charity fundraising dog walk set for Saturday, October 10 from 9am - noon, at the local Wilson Farm Park in Wayne, PA.

Who can pass up an entire morning of fun activities for adults, kids and canines? The walk will feature the National Dog Show Therapy Dog Ambassador Team and performance canines from the PennVet Working Dog Center doing demonstrations.  The lineup will feature David Frei, the TV personality and America’s foremost authority on all things canine plus contests for various contests for dogs organized by the well-known boarding/training facility What A Good Dog.   There will be food and giveaways and sponsor tables plus a one-mile walk scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m.

Is this too good to be true? Can you really come play with many adorable pooches while also raising money for a good cause? Absolutely.
Chris Duke is an award-winning fine artist, specializing in portraits of families, individuals and pets. Duke is the official artist of the Kennel Club of Philadelphia and the 2015 National Dog Show presented by Purina. She was also a finalist in the Art Shows at the Dog Show, a national juried competition dedicated to canine art.

The event proceeds will benefit Main Line Deputy Dog, New Leash on Life USA and The Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House.

Main Line Deputy Dog helps people with physical challenges or mental health concerns train their own dogs to be fully certified service dogs. A deputy dog performs tasks that help someone function with increased independence and greater confidence.

New Leash on Life USA puts therapy-trained shelter dogs into Philadelphia prisons for inmate care during the period before the inmate is released to help prepare him/her for re-introduction to society. Inmates learn how to care for the dogs, obtaining skills and confidence to assist with future employability.

The Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House aids seriously ill children and their families by creating a community of comfort and hope. Therapy dogs play a vital role in their mission of creating a home away from home for these families while their children receive treatment at local hospitals.

As mentioned before, there will also be an appearance by the National Dog Show Therapy Dog Ambassador Team. This is a dynamic team of canines who make regular visits to hospitals and healthcare facilities, including the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House, where they help comfort patients and families.

Dog-sitting Adventures

Max plays with his toy, while Maggie gets cozy. Last week, I had the opportunity to dog-sit two Dachshunds, named Maggie and Max. Just from looking at their short legs and long bodies compared to my Australian Shepherds’ long legs and large bodies, I knew that Maggie and Max were going to be very different from Buddy and Magic! Everything from their bedtime routines to their meal times were different from my own furry friends. However, over the course of my stay, I learned that even Dachshunds and Australian Shepherds share some similarities. Maggie curled up on her pillow. Both pairs of dogs have certain things that set them off. Buddy likes to chase deer and play with a tennis ball, while Max prefers to bark at rabbits and play with a squeaky toy he ripped all of the stuffing out of. What Movies Taught Me About Dogs!

                     It isn’t too hard to find a movie about a dog. There is the Beethoven series, 101 Dalmatians, Lassie, and Bolt. If there was a dog in the plot line, chances are that I watched that movie growing up! Three influential fictional dogs in my lifetime were Air Bud, Balto, and Snoopy. AIR BUD:             Who wouldn’t love a pudding-eating, basketball-playing golden retriever? While Air Bud gave me unrealistic expectations about my dogs’ athleticism, it also taught me that dogs are good friends in tough times. I might not be able to play basketball with Buddy or Magic, but I can still play games with them and talk to them.
